NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1999

  • BRETHREN ALIVE 2000

  • Under the banner of this title, BRF is planning to sponsor a spiritually enriching conference July 28-30, 2000. We have rented facilities at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA for the event which will begin on Friday evening. All meals will be provided on Saturday, and also Sunday breakfast. The meeting will conclude with the Sunday morning service. This will replace and greatly expand the previous one day training seminars that have been sponsored by BRF. This event is planned with all ages and the entire family in mind. Activities for children and youth will be planned, along with biblical instruction on a number of different subjects and in a variety of settings. The design of the weekend is to provide a wholesome, physically invigorating and spiritually enriching time together. BRF is planning to underwrite a major part of the cost so that it will be within the reach of all. More details later.

  • Y2K AND ALBERT

  • Perhaps Albert can give us some counsel for Y2K. A man was moving through the grocery store with his boy, who was bent on misbehaving. The man was heard saying words like, "Keep calm, Albert; take it easy, Albert; don't get upset, Albert." A kindly, older lady paused to pat the little fellow on his head called him Albert. The father quickly responded, "He's John, I'm Albert." While some are in a state of panic about the new millennium, why not read Matthew 6, and keep calm, Albert.

  • THE BIBLE IS STILL THE ISSUE

  • A young man with a Mohawk haircut (not necessarily a BRF recommended hair style), showed up at a BRF event at this year's Annual Conference in Miiwaukee. A bit inquisitive at his coming, someone made a special effort to talk with him and learned that as a first time Annual Conference attender, his pastor had urged him to get acquainted with BRF, or, the pastor said, "he may get the impression that no one in the Church of the Brethren believes the Bible!"

  • THE NEXT BEST THING TO BEING THERE

  • The General BRF Meeting was held on September 11, 1999 at the Tearcoat Church of the Brethren in the West Marva District. People came from eight states and 32 different congregations. At least one was there who lives on the West Coast. If you would like to listen in to the meeting by way of tape, contact:

    Leon J. Wenger
    130 Clearview Drive
    Ephrata, PA 17522
Please send him $3.50 for each tape. There is one for the morning session and one tape for the afternoon session. The focus of the day was on exploring mission attitudes, past and present, in the Church of the Brethren. You will also learn how one of the speakers delivered his sermon without even showing up at the meeting.
