Nathan Keller, Midway Congregation, ANE District, is planning , along with a group from Grove City College, to spend two weeks this summer in Nambia, Africa. The group will be going through Africa Inland Mission and will be working with AIDS victims. As part of their ministry they will also be sharing the gospel. The cost for each participant is approximately $3,000. The BMF committee agreed to contribute $500 toward Nathan's summer ministry.
Quentin & Darlene Rissler Quentin Rissler, a licensed minister in the Blue Ball Congregation, ANE District, is planning to spend five months in Hawaii with Youth With A Mission (YWAM). There will be three months of training and two months in outreach. Quentin's involvement in training and outreach is intended to go toward his ordination process. Quentin and Darlene plan to take their four children with them. The total cost for the trip is $42,000. The BMF committee agreed to contribute $2,000 toward the Risslers.
NEW MISSION DEVELOPMENTS
Fred and Janet Beam have been "career missionaries" with Africa Inland Mission (AIM), serving for 35 years. Fred is an ordained
minister in the COB. They are currently serving as HIV/AIDS coordinators through AIM, overseeing more than 200 missionaries who are involved in HIV/AIDS work. However, they are winding down this part of their work and are planning to be relieved of it by June 2006.
In its place the Beams have been asked by AIM to be involved in children's ministry in the United States. The Beams have met with both the BRF and BMF committees and have outlined their vision and mission. Their core mission is to establish a ministry to children within the Church of the Brethren, particularly in our smaller congregations. They see a trend in the United States toward larger churches. But they want to focus on smaller ones.
It has been their observation that there is almost a drought of children within most COB congregations. And although many mission agencies write literature for children, they have few missionaries who
specialize in ministering to children and challenging them both for missions, Christian service and prayer. They have observed that there is a famine of people who are willing to devote themselves to a lifetime of mission service. And often one of the first questions potential candidates ask is, "What are your retirement benefits?"
Therefore, the Beams would like to work to remedy the situation. They have described something called the "4-14 WINDOW." This is the typical age-range when children will come to devote their lives to the Lord. The Beams would also like to challenge children during their "4-14 WINDOW" to devote their lives to missions or Christian service, but certainly to prayer. To aid in this process, it is their belief that the Sunday School movement should be strengthened.
The Beams are willing to travel across the denomination at their own expense to help revitalize children's ministries. They are scheduled to present their vision at the Annual Conference BRF noon luncheon at Des Moines, IA, on July 3, 2006. Please consider having Fred and Janet into your congregation.
